South Slovak wine region occupies the territory located in the southernmost part of Slovakia, north of the Danube River. It is divided into two distinct sub-region, differing suitability of natural conditions for growing vines. The western part, especially around the town of Dunajska Streda, is situated on the Danube fluvial sediments (gravel and aggregates) and provides conditions particularly suitable for the production of wines of lesser quality. On the contrary, the eastern, mainly to the north, northwest and northeast of the city Štúrovo providing suitable conditions for growing of varieties of intensive heat and sunshine. This is the warmest area of Slovakia and the vineyards are planted on quality loess – Danube plain. There are clearly the best conditions for growing of grapes suitable for the production of high quality red wines.
